I visited the Grand Canyon a couple of years ago while on vacation in the USA.
We camped at the Grand Canyon for a couple of days giving us to time to really explore this vast wonder. It is absolutely breathtaking. Until you stand at the edge, you really don’t have any idea just how truly large this place is.
I flew on top of the Grand Canyon in a small propeller plane from the Grand Canyon South Rim airport. The plane held about 19 people and was rather tight. We sat 3 people across! I recommend this as it gives you a completely different perspective of the canyon. From the air you can see just how different each wall of the canyon is. The flight allows you to escape the crowds of the tourists down below. From the air you could see how the sun affects the colors of the rocks; which look amazing against the dazzling blue-ish green of the Colorado River. To truly appreciate the Canyon in its entire splendor, visit the Grand Canyon at different times such as sunrise and sunset. (more…)

Here’s a great post from tooners talking about how she overcame her fears on a Grand Canyon Hike.
My niece, Annie Mae (whom I just reacquainted myself w/ after about 15 years), was talking on her blog about some of her favorite places in the U.S. It got me to thinking and I’d have to say that my favorite place, thus far, would be the Grand Canyon.
I was living in Texas when I went there. Me and seven other women (only one of which I knew personally) drove there – a 20 something hr. drive – and then hiked down the Canyon, spent two nights at Canyon Ranch (down at the bottom), and then hiked back out. It is something I’ll never forget.
The drive there was crazy. It was in February and many of the roads to Arizona were icy. I’m not a big fan of driving over ice, but we made it. I listened to books on tape most of the trip, so the drive wasn’t too bad. We pulled into the tourist site/facilities at the southern post in the early morning – I think it was around 5:30 or something. Our group leader’s sister worked at the Grand Canyon and would be our guide down the paths to the ranch below and then back up in two days time. (more…)
